Whoo hoo! Spore Space Age attack reduction mod!

Thank god someone made one.  Found it on gamefaqs by a named Durthos.  Here's the post with links:

Description - This mod will reduce the frequency of all space event for the purpose of allowing people to enjoy their universe, rather than babysitting their planets.

Extraction - It is in .rar format, so you will need winrar or equivalent to unzip. Also you may notice the file explodes from 8mB to 190mB. This is normal. (Hence why I compressed it)

    Installation
-Back up your Spore_Game.package in the ..spore/data folder. Back it up to a different folder.
-Extract Spore_Game.package from whichever version you downloaded and put it into the ..spore/data folder.
    -Start a new game.

    Un install
    -Delete my mod
    -Restore backup Spore_Game.package to ..spore\data.

Note - There are badges earned by preventing eco disasters, and defending your allies, so you may wish to refrain from downloading the bigger files, but it is your galaxy, play it how you wish.

Works on existing saved games, too.

I refuse to purchase Spore (or any other EA product for that matter) while they are using their current DRM scheme.  When I purchase a game, I don't like being told how many times I'm allowed to install it.

But good for you for finding this.  Aside from the DRM issues, how is the game?

Incidentely you can create a creature to protest against DRM in spore, but EA own those creatures and delete them.

    Ted:

What! You can only install EA games so many times! WTF!

As far as I know, they have only done this particular DRM scheme on one other game so far.  It's either Mass Effect or BioShock.  I can never remember which.  But basically, you can only install it on up to three machines.  Ever.  Now, you can install and reinstall on those 3 machines as often as you'd like, apparently, but if you try to put it on a 4th machine (new computer, or major upgrade to an existing computer, for example), the game won't let you.  Then you have to call EA and plead and beg and convince them that you're a good little consumer, and hope that they decide to allow you to install it a 4th time.  From what I understand right now, it's pretty painless.  But there's nothing to say that that won't change in the future.  Then there's the fact that it's using authentication servers to track this info.  What happens when they decide to take down the servers years from now, to save money?  Then you won't be able to install it at all.  So you're paying $50 to rent a game for as long as EA decides to allow it.

Then there's the whole SecuROM issue too, and what it may or may not do to your computer.  My problem is that they do all this in the name of combating piracy.  Except they're doing all of this shit to the customers that DID shell out the money, while the pirates don't have to deal with any of this crap.  For fuck's sake, the game was cracked and all over the internet several days before the game was even released to retail.  I found links to several torrents for the game without even trying.  Talk about bass ackwards.

I think this whole thing is more of an attack on the second-hand game market than combating piracy.  Who will buy a copy of Spore used, not knowing if the three installations have all been used up?  Good luck getting EA to recognize a receipt from a used game store (or eBay, or your friend who didn't want the game anymore) as valid proof of ownership of the game.  I don't appreciate them violating the first-sale doctrine in this manner, and as much as I was looking forward to Red Alert 3, since this game will also have a similar DRM scheme, they won't be getting my money for that either.  Or, as I have said, any EA product until they stop this bullshit.

Of course, since I refuse to pirate games either, I will be a sad panda when Red Alert 3 is released.

Say what you want about MS, but they got this figured out. They use a key... they track that key's use. If hardware info changes enough they make you call in. If you call in, you get a new activation code... easy. Then, if the software was not installed for a year, you can install on a totally different machine and they wont care. They assume a hardware upgrade or a new PC.

    EA are tools.

When it comes to games, Stardock has it figured out.

They know that piracy will happen, and that there is nothing they can do about it.  They also do not believe in punishing their paying customers with DRM, when they are the one actually giving money for the game.  They don't even have their games perform CD checks when starting up the game.  Their games do have CD keys, but they aren't required for installation or playing the game.  The CD keys are for registering the game to your Stardock account.  Doing this provides you with patches, free content upgrades, and, since most of their games can be purchased online through a system similar to STeam, links to redownload a game if you need it.  They make you want to pay the money to get all the extra features, or for like many, including myself, rewarding a company for not treating you like a criminal.

If the Space stage of Spore is your favorite stage, you may want to look into Sins of a Solar Empire or Galactic Civilizations II, both Stardock games.

But I'm not trying to derail this thread.  How is Spore so far?

Yea, Stardock and Steam are pretty sexy.

Corbine was telling me that the only gripe he had with Spore was answered by the mod he posted above. Though, he has not given a review since he got the mod. Basically, he said the game was awesome then he goes to space and lands on another planet... lag... 12 warnings that his other colonies were under attack. Go beat those guys down, find more colonies. Rinse and repeat.

I would agree that the whole space bit is rather annoying when it comes to the attacks, but I found for the most part that planets can take care of themselves when you put defenses on them. By going to help them out you get more bucks and leaving an ally when they need help just means they will be a tiny bit less happy with you. But hey, your just one ship you can't save 10 planets at one time.
