I played what was described as a late alpha/early beta at the Dolby booth at PAX. I like the controls - they had it set to a Freelancer-esque keyboard and mouse scheme, but I believe joystick is supported as well. The game ran smoothly on what I think were Alienware M15X laptops. The server-side software seems to be slightly less mature than the client-side, however; the server had to be restarted when I was playing due to a bug that caused the enemies to gain health when I shot at them. I figure such issues will be mostly rectified by any sort of public beta, though.

Yea, they support joystick combat as well. They consider that the way to have a 'proper' dog fight. Gota love the British. ;) The game does look very Freelancer-like and the keyboard mouse controls that they described sounded like Freelancer.

Does that make me British?  You know that was my biggest issue with Freelancer.  Well, that, and once we got the cool weapons for our ships, I felt like there was nothing left to do.

    Re: Jumpgate Evolution

Well, I was more alluding to use of the term 'proper' as it seems to be a common phrase for British folks. But yea, I would like to be able to use a joystick as well. I think you can get better control that way.

One thing I heard about JGE that sounds just fantastic is an idea why have about AI quest generation. What happens, is one person or group gets a quest to escort a transport full of goods from point A to point B. Then, a totally other group or person gets a quest to raid a transport. Turns out that this is the same transport for the two groups/individuals. The AI evens things out based on the two sides. And the raiding group can just attack the transport when ever how ever they want. That just sounds like a freakin' blast. Oh, and the quests were AI generated. So, you never know if a transport escort quest will be raided by AI, human, or left alone.

On top of that, you could have people who just like to raid transports for cashy money. They could gank both groups, and make you both fail!

The game does not plan on stressing leveling as much as say WoW does. But, you need to level in order to use new and better ships and weapons. It really does appear to be Freelancer 2... the same game, but just with a more robust scope and a dynamic universe.

Holy crap, it is almost exactly like Freelancer. Check this vid on their MySpace page:

    Freelancer??? ... I think so.

Already signed up. Did so the day I found that actually. They are not in beta yet, but plan to be there soon.
